Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics) Seven Hills
Root canal treatment (RCT) involves cleaning, sterilising, and filling the inside of a tooth when the nerve has become infected.
At My Local Dentists Seven Hills, we want to make the process comfortable and easy for you.
WHY DO WE NEED ROOT CANAL TREATMENTS?
Root canal treatment is required when the tooth’s nerve (‘the pulp’) is infected. In the middle of each tooth is a tunnel called the root canal, which contains the tooth’s nerve.
Untreated decaying or fractured teeth allow bacteria to infiltrate the nerve and penetrate the root canal.
Sometimes, the nerve infection is so severe that an abscess forms inside the mouth. Other times, you may not notice any pain or discomfort from a tooth requiring root canal treatment.

Diagnosis and Preparation
X-rays will be taken by your dentist or endodontist to evaluate the state of the root canals and identify any signs of infection. Local anaesthetic will be used to numb the region around the tooth.
Access Opening
The pulp chamber and root canals are accessed by drilling a tiny hole into the tooth.
Pulp Removal
Advanced dental tools carefully remove the damaged or inflamed pulp. Then, any leftover bacteria and debris are removed by thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth.
Filling the Root Canals
Once the canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped, they are filled with a biocompatible gutta-percha material. This material seals the canals and prevents future infections.
Post-Treatment Care
When the procedure is done, the patient may feel some discomfort in the area where the cyst was removed, which is usually relieved with simple over-the-counter analgesics.
Your Seven Hills dentist will give precise guidelines regarding your tooth care, hygiene practices, and when you need to come for follow-up examinations to check your healing tooth.

FAQs
Is a root canal painful?
Modern anaesthetics and methods mean that receiving a root canal typically doesn’t hurt more than receiving a filling. Most patients report feeling little to no pain during the procedure.
How long does a root canal procedure take?
The time of the operation depends on the case’s intricacy. It usually takes one or two appointments, each lasting 60 to 90 minutes.
What are the signs that I might need a root canal?
Common signs include:
- A severe toothache.
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold.
- Tooth discolouration.
- Swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums.
- A recurring pimple on the gums.
After receiving a root canal, can I eat?
It’s advisable to wait until the numbness from the anaesthesia wears off before eating. Until the treated tooth is completely rebuilt with a permanent filling or crown, limit your diet to soft foods and refrain from chewing them.
What happens if I don't get a root canal?
Infections can spread to nearby tissues and result in abscesses, bone loss, and excruciating pain if treatment is not received. Ultimately, the tooth may need to be extracted.
