Many people are interested in whiter teeth. The best way to tell if your teeth are suited for any kind of whitening treatment is to talk to us. We will talk to you about the causes of the issue, and help you make an informed decision about which treatment option may work best.  What we want to do is help you to understand:

  • What causes teeth staining?

  • What whitening options are available?

  • What do I need to understand about whitening treatments?

What causes stained or discoloured teeth?

Most causes of tooth stains are from an external source, rather than from within the tooth itself.  Much of this comes from your diet and lifestyle habits. E.g

  • coffee, tea, red wine, fizzy drinks

  • eating foods high in colouring like soups, curries and pasta sauces

  • smoking or chewing tobacco

  • poor brushing and cleaning technique

Often the external causes of stains can be reduced by coming regularly for check up and cleans.  Having a habit of drinking water regularly after eating and drinking can also help to minimise external stains.

Other tooth stain causes are internal, which means the discolourisation comes from inside the tooth usually during the development and formation of the tooth or in some cases from a tooth with an unhealthy nerve.

What teeth whitening options do we offer?

It is important to understand that if you want to whiten your teeth, it is best to seek a qualified dental professional and not rely on whitening products from the supermarket, pharmacy or internet.

  • Take Home Professional Whitening Kits

    • We take moulds of your teeth and fabricate customised upper and lower whitening trays for you (they look like thin mouth guards)

    • At home, you follow instructions in the kit to apply the whitening gel to the tray and wear the trays for about 30 minutes each day for about 1-2 weeks depending on your circumstances

  • In Chair Whitening

    • These appointments usually take 1 to 1.5 hours long at the dental clinic

    • Don’t worry, we’ll turn on Netflix for you to keep you entertained!

    • We polish the surfaces of your teeth, place a mouth retractor on, line the gums with a special protective seal and the paint on the whitening gel

    • We repeat the cycle a few times depending on your tolerance and expectations.

What do I need to understand about whitening treatments?

The results of whitening procedures will largely depend on your lifestyle and diet, but may last up to 1-2 years

Sensitivity on the gums and teeth can be a common occurrence during whitening procedures. The symptoms generally go away quite quickly or within a few days and we advise patients carefully on how to minimise these issues.

To maximise your teeth whitening treatment, the following should be avoided:

  • Avoid consuming foods and drinks that can stain your teeth e.g. If it could stain a white T-shirt, then it’s best to avoid it

  • Avoid red wine and instead, select a refreshing Semillon or other white wine

  • Don’t use coloured mouthwash and toothpaste

  • Avoid soft drinks that are red, orange, purple, pink, blue or any other bold colour

  • Avoid brightly coloured fruit drinks and cordials

  • Stop consuming tobacco products of any kind
