You just bit into the pork crackling over Christmas lunch with your friends and you heard a crack inside your mouth! That didn’t sound right. It wasn’t the crackling, did you just crack your tooth? Do I need an emergency appointment? Or, you’ve got your extended family over and you’re watching the Christmas classics like Home Alone, Love Actually or The Grinch! And mid way through eating your pop corn, you noticed something that isn’t an unpopped popcorn kernel, one of your teeth feel chipped and broken. Accidents happen! But here at Capstone Dental, we want to give you some good tips on looking after your teeth this Christmas Holiday season!

Top Dental Tips for this Christmas Holiday

Tip 1 - Brush twice a day and floss every day. This will need to occur every day of the year, regardless of whether it’s Christmas. It will lay a good foundation for keeping your teeth nice and health, especially over Christmas

Tip 2 - Sugar in Moderation - It’s not like we can’t have any chocolates or lollies over the Christmas holidays. But it’s important to eat sugar in moderation because it can cause tooth decay and toothaches. Drink lots of water after sugary foods and drinks to wash out the sugar.

Tip 3 - Drink water! H20 is king! If you don’t have to drink alcohol, soft drinks, energy drinks of fruit juice, then go for water as much as you can. It’s the best form of hydration and good for your teeth and whole body. Alcohol, soft drinks, energy drinks and fruit juice all contain either lots of sugars or acids which can erode or damage your teeth if you have too much of it. Always drink water after other drinks to wash away the sugars and acids.

Tip 4 - Your teeth are for EATING. Don’t use your teeth to open a bottle of beer or tear open the packaging or cracking nuts open. If you’re eating crab or lobster or seafood, use the nut cracker!

Tip 5 - Carefully chew your hard foods - e.g. pork crackling, T-bone steaks, unpopped popcorn kernels, ice cubes.

Tip 6 - If you notice a chipped or broken tooth - STAY CALM AND DO NOT PANIC.

  • Has the whole tooth come out? If Yes, try to put your tooth back into the socket and go straight to your dentist! Don’t put the tooth back into the socket if it’s a baby tooth.

  • If the whole tooth hasn’t come out, is it painful? If Yes - go straight to your dentist.

  • If the tooth isn’t painful, is it sensitive? If Yes - try using some sensitive toothpastes like Sensodyne or Colgate Pro Relief on the area.

  • If it isn’t sensitive, then you may be able to wait until Christmas is over before you visit your local dentist. But if you are unsure, please contact your local dentist.

  • Regardless of whether it is sore, painful, sensitive or sharp - do your best to brush and floss carefully around the chipped and broken tooth until you can see your local dentist. The cleaner your tooth remains the better it is for your tooth
